Eden Prairie Schools Announces New Associate Principal Hires
Eden Prairie Schools (EPS) is welcoming two new associate principals to the district on Aug. 1.
According to a school district release, Nancy Benz has been hired as associate principal at Cedar Ridge Elementary, and Tom Walters has been hired as the associate principal at Eden Lake Elementary School.
Here are more details on each new principal:
She has most recently been principal at an elementary (K-4) school for Westonka Public Schools, a position she has held for seven years. In that role, Nancy helped implement new curriculum; provided ongoing professional development in areas including reading strategies, Professional Learning Communities, and personalized learning; and worked to implement the Westonka District Strategic Plan. Her school was named a National Blue Ribbon School in 2012 and a Star Tribune Top Workplace in 2010.
Prior to that, Nancy was an instructional leader, district mathematics coordinator and elementary classroom teacher for Robbinsdale Area Schools where she worked for 13 years. Nancy began her education career as an elementary teacher in Sleepy Eye. She has a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Minnesota State University – Mankato, and a master’s in education and principal licensure from Hamline University. Nancy’s start date with Eden Prairie Schools is August 1.
Tom brings five years of experience as lead teacher/assistant principal, STEM coach, teacher and service-learning coordinator for Easter Carver County Schools. In those positions, Tom developed a STEM lab, co-designed a STEM-based curriculum, designed professional development related to infusing STEM throughout the curriculum, managed all school standardized testing, and created two professional development communities around STEM and personalized learning. Prior to that, Tom and his wife were the founders and owners of Digital Kids World, creating curriculum and instruction for summer camp programs for four years. He was previously a curriculum integration manager for Pearson Digital Learning in Arizona for three years, and a classroom teacher for four years in Colorado.
Tom has a bachelor’s degree in marketing from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and received his teaching licensure from Concordia College. He has a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction, and principal licensure from the University of St. Thomas. Tom’s start date with Eden Prairie Schools is August 1.
